Name: Albert Falls

Route 1 – Albert Falls

Route 1 includes Ottos Bluff, Kyalami Bay, Cramond and Albert Falls, all bordering the Albert Falls Dam just outside Pietermaritzburg, colonial capital of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), South Africa’s Garden province. Ottos Bluff was first settled in the 1840s by the Otto family who established the farm Upper Saxony below the bluff which later came to bear their name. Their descendants can still be found among the farmers who dairy and grow cane, timber and fruit throughout the district.

The Albert Falls Dam is rated one of the best bass fishing dams in the world and an international bass fishing competition is held there annually. The whole area boasts an abundance of bird life, and wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy nature on foot or from game-viewing vehicles. Surrounded by stunning views, visitors can take part in popular family activities like water skiing, para-gliding, canoeing and fishing or spend some quiet time walking or birding. Amble with us either as a day visitor or as a guest in one of our lodges, B&Bs, self-catering units or camping and caravanning sites.
